The back is a massive group of muscles — not just one — that can stand up to a huge training load and demands attention from all angles. It doesn’t exhibit the same stubborn refusal to grow as calves often do, and it’s not as fragile and precarious as the oft-injured shoulder joints. When it comes to attacking your back, you can’t just kick in the front door and hope to get results. You need to have it thoroughly surrounded.
Start with compound exercises. It’s the best way for any beginner to get started. Compound exercises not only help you develop your back but also help with coordination and core strength. Opt for moves like the deadlift—which targets your back, legs, and glutes—as opposed to an isolation back exercise like a stiff-arm pulldown.
Never sacrifice good form for more weight. Piling iron on the bar until you completely round your back on barbell rows is a recipe for injury, not additional mass.
