What to Wear: Fashion Advice for Skinny Girls

If you’re naturally slender it can be harder than you think to know which styles and clothes will best suit your shape. While many trends look great on slim figures there are some key items every skinny woman should invest in and some fashion no-no’s that are best avoided.

To find out more about how to dress if you’re thin, we spoke to leading fashion expert and TV host Nicky Hambleton-Jones to find out her styling secrets for slim line women, from adding curves in all the right places, to making the most of your slim shape it’s all right here…

If you’re skinny what kinds of dresses, tops and pants should you wear?

You can add curves to your frame with peplum style dresses and tops. Bootleg jeans and pants are great on skinny women too as they give the body extra shape and dimension. Alternatively skinny jeans will obviously look fabulous.

Dresses best for skinny women as you can try those peplums, babydolls, straight-cut dresses, and shifts for adding curves and volumes

Are there any style shortcuts to making you look more curvy when you’re very slim?

Wear horizontal stripes on the top half to give your body some added curves. Avoid wearing a lot of black as this can make you look slimmer than you are. Clothing with structure and a peplum top or dress can help give the illusion of a fuller figure. Wear tops and dresses with ruffled necklines. A little ruffle can do wonders for a flat chest.

What kinds of fabrics are most flattering when you’re slim?

Fabrics with some structure are great for creating the illusion of curve, but you don’t want to go too bulky as this can make your frame look rigid. If you want to accentuate your figure then clingy fabrics are great but if you want to add curve to your frame then avoid them and go for something thicker like wool.

Pleats, layers, belts, textured fabrics are good options to accentuate your silhouette

Can you recommend any accessories that can help make you look fuller figured?

Belts should become your new best friend! Both thick and skinny belts paired over a floaty dress or top will add shape to your outfit and accentuate your tiny waist.

Style inspiration Trends come and go but what style staples should every skinny woman have in their wardrobe?

Thanks to Coco Chanel Breton stripes will never go out of fashion and they’re perfect for creating curves. Long sleeve tops are great for disguising thin upper arms, and boot cut pants are the perfect alternative to skinny jeans.

What about beachwear – what style swimwear will flatter skinny women and make them feel more feminine?

Look for tops with padding, under wiring and a triangular shape to give the illusion of a fuller cup size and if you have a fuller bust look for supportive halter-neck tops. Again, horizontal stripes will give the illusion of a fuller bust.

Play with colors, prints, ruffles, layers, and other elements for adding volumes

What are the style no-no’s when you are very slim?

If you’re very slim and want to look more curvaceous then avoid clingy clothing, wearing lots of black in one go and don’t wear overly baggy clothing.  Moreover, women with lean figure should avoid sleeveless tops as the appearance of shoulders are more thin. Go for ¾ length or long sleeves.

Do you have any other style advice for slim women?

Layering is a great way to give the illusion of curves, layer tops and accessorize with chunky scarves. A lot of women use baggy clothing as a means to hide the fact they are on the thin side, this is a mistake as it actually accentuates how small you are as the clothing tends to swamp your frame.

What is the best way to hide scrawny arms?

Wearing long sleeves coupled with a waterfall blazer or jacket will draw attention away from the upper half of your body, especially when teamed with some bright shoes or pants. Batwing sleeves are also great for adding some additional shape.

High Sleek Boots for thin legged women

What is the best way to hide skinny legs?

In the summer maxi-skirts are great for hiding legs and looking stylish at the same time, but again remember to avoid anything too baggy.

Any footwear preference for Skinny Legs?

Skinny girls should prefer lower heels and Dark colored boots. Boots are generally long and they will disguise the skinny legs under your skirt. At the same time, be sure that you avoid heavy shoes. Heavy shoes will make your legs look even thinner. Instead, wear the shoes which are light weight. The color will add weight to your legs and draw attention away from bony knees.

  • Okay wear ruffles?? Are you serious?? It makes me look like I’m some kind of taboo…as for the skinny jean issue, now that’s what I look good in, it all depends on the kind you buy nd how you dress it out on top…so skinny jeans work don’t discourage them just cause you don’t know how to pick them… Straight cut jeans?? Psssht! No offense but those are white tendencies a fashion don’t for skinny people aswell! #DONE

  • does this site hate skinny girls? Why should we basically hide our bodies? that doesn’t seem right. And I have big boobs and a big butt but long skinny legs and arms. Do all these still apply to me?

    • We do not hate skinny girls, rather we encourage them to live a healthy life style. Don’t you see those skinny fashion models who are striving for skinny figure. We hate those sort of attempt. By the way, you are not skinny as you say. So you are curvy, isn’t it?

  • Cool, I never knew that wearing horizontals could give one a curvier image. I agree with not wearing v necks; v necks does not work for me. This helped a lot. Thanks!! 🙂

  • This post and the above comment, posted by the author, are highly offensive to skinny girls. How dare the writer tell anyone what they can’t wear, or what isn’t made for them? Also, saying they “encourage them to live a healthy lifestyle.” Not every “skinny” or “thin” girl is unhealthy. That is completely incorrect and unessessary. The author should not write posts with discrimination and seeming envy of thin women.

  • I’m extremely skinny due to genetics as well as a thyroid condition and I take offense to this post. Who are these people to tell me what I can and can’t wear? I guess I’m supposed to dress like a nun for the rest of my life

  • For one I think the lady in the pic looks very nice with the sleevless top and skinny jeans she is wearing. This info can be taken as a guideline but definately not the rule for how slender women should dress. Eating healthy because you want to take care of yourself is not unhealthy what is unhealthy is not accepting one anther as we are. Fat, skinny, tall ,short ,black, white, pink, green ect. Americans are the one of the most unhealthy people in the world. We eat everything in sight don’t exercise take meds for everything, have surgery to try to perfect ourselves. If we would stop catagorizing people we would all be much happier.

  • I am so skinny and this is not offensive. Get over your selves! And stop getting so offended by every little thing lol! And if you are extremely offended then stop reading. This post has been helpful for skinny people that battle to find the right clothing.

  • The above tips are very helpful.
I wonder why some.girks found it offensive. That just means they are not comfortable in their own bodies

    • We are, I am anyway. These posts about being skinny tells girls they’re unattractive because they’re skinny, by saying men dont find it appealing and by saying its unhealthy when it isnt always true. I was born thin, but I’m still shapely and curves and I’m not unhealthy and I get compliments all the time when according to this I’m “disgusting” “like a model”. So this site just skinny shames girls and makes them feel insecure. No one should be shaming anyone.

  • I was born skinny, and all of you internet people say being skinny is unhealthy and its ugly and shit. Well stop, because its not about being too skinny or too fat. You guys only want perfect looking figures. You want it to be a toned stomach, toned legs and all of that. WELL WE WERE ALL BORN DIFFERENT SO ACCEPT IT!

  • I am very thin. 5’4″ and 101 lbs. I hate it, hard to find clothes that fit etc. I have to wear a padded rear end and bra and still get comments about it all the time. However, I can look really good in clothes that do fit. I love all the positive advice about fashion and all. It’s helpful even if I don’t agree about everything. There’s no reason for negativity here. They’re just trying to help. Take it or leave it just don’t ridicule good intentions. No one is trying to be insulting, just helpful.
